Adelaide boasts one of Australia’s best Elvis tribute performers, Joe Bikic. Supported by excellent musicians, Bikic captures the very essence of Elvis Presley’s persona and leaves audiences in the Elvis mood. His professional act includes several costumes from all eras of Elvis’ career.
But if you need even more Elvis, lots of Elvises, plenty of performances, outrageous Elvis costumes, endless Elvis memorabilia and more Elvis themed events than you could possibly attend – you need to go to the Parkes Elvis Festival. Parkes in Central West NSW is approximately 12 hours drive from Adelaide.
Parkes is home to the Kings Castle Elvis Museum, containing a collection of genuine Elvis artefacts owned or used by Elvis during his lifetime. Many of the objects belong to ex-Wiggle Greg Page who has collected for years and generously loans the items to Parkes so they can be displayed for everyone to appreciate.
Parkes’ Elvisdom comes to the fore in the second week of January when the Parkes Elvis Festival roars to life. Everyone in Parkes likes to get involved, down to the local postman, but it’s the estimated 18,000 visitors who really get the town rocking when they almost triple the population.
They go for 5 days of markets, buskers, shows, exhibitions and other Elvis themed events and everyone relishes in the opportunity to dress up and get down! It’s one big celebration, culminating with a street parade on Saturday afternoon and official concert on Saturday night and concluding on Sunday with among other events, an Elvis Gospel service.
The main problem people encounter with the Parkes Elvis Festival is finding accommodation, as the huge influx of visitors exhausts Parkes’ accommodation venues and even books out all of the towns within hours dive of Parkes. Travel to the event is also in short supply, with the main transport, the Elvis express train from Sydney filling its seats within days of release.
So to make the most of the Elvis experience visitors could travel to Sydney and join an Aussie Farmstay and Bush Adventures tour. The special once a year Parkes Elvis Festival and Farmstay Tour, incorporates the highlight Saturday of the Parkes Elvis Festival and Elvis Gospel Service with a farmstay on an historic sheep farm and Blue Mountains attractions.
